<image:caption>Hi students and parents! My name is Melissa and I have been tutoring K-college students over 15 years: reading, writing, Language Arts up through the college level, and math through 9th grade. I also earned an MA in Literature and Writing Studies and taught two freshmen composition classes at Cal State University-San Marcos. My daughter is currently in elementary school, so I am empathetic to what students have been facing this year. I have experience with online resources and tools to facilitate and optimize virtual learning. I am comfortable working with current school curriculum or creating my own to supplement school work or a combination of both. In my spare time, you can usually find us at Safari Park (we have been long-term members!), or out walking on the beach. Looking forward to meeting and working with you!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to NOT feel like your child’s assistant? Tip #1 - Tip #1: Map out weekly routines</image:title>
<image:caption>Use a big visual weekly calendar to plot out your routine for each day of the week. Make it colorful and fun! Model this for your child to help them then map their week out. Color code classes, activities, breaks, and fun activities so that it is eye-catching and visual appealing to refer to on a daily basis! Incorporate things like your typical wake up time, school starting, different class times, hours to get your homework done, and mostly importantly breaks whether they are for food, movement, transitions or just some much needed relaxation! Outlining your daily routine together will help your child know what is expected of them during the day. They have a place to refer when they have some “unstructured time” and know when they should be doing homework or when they can do an activity of their choice so that you have some freedom to get your work done They can also easily see the upcoming days and what will be ahead. This will help with prioritizing when it comes time for them to do their homework. This beautiful acrylic weekly schedule is from Etsy!! Go heck it out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to NOT feel like your child’s assistant? Tip #3 - So how Do We build skills and keep track of time?</image:title>
<image:caption>Use things that your child is aware of like, “Mom will be back in 30 minutes that is as long as one x show ” Keep a clock visible in a common space in your home like a wall clock or wearing a watch to get a feel for time Analog clocks are necessary for building time management as they allow us to “see” time in its relative fractions Talk your planning outside so your child can see backwards planning modeled. Whether it is making dinner, running errands, or getting from A to B, think about how much time is needed to get ready and talk it out accordingly. Think - how much time will this task take me? Then - when should I start to make sure I’m done on time? Set reminders or alarms to make sure you stick to your plan Model using a calendar with advance notifications OR use a visual calendar so your plans are right in front of you, and help set this up for your child Items to check out: The time timer app on your phone, purchase a physical one click here, or even this cool whiteboard with timer! For young teens (and your self) a really awesome alarm clock to use is the Philips sunrise alarm clock. It allows for a more natural way of waking up as it simulates the sunrising depending on the time you have it set for, and then you don’t have to rely on your cell phone as your wake up call!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“My child was struggling to learn to read. Kelsey encouraged us to seek further testing to uncover and learn more about how our child learned and what may be causing the struggles our child was facing. She made us feel comfortable with the idea of getting her assessed and removed the stigma and fear often associated. Not only did we uncover our child has dyslexia, we learned all the amazing strengths and gifts she has. With expertise and research-based training, Kelsey taught our daughter how to read! She now loves reading.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Working with Kelsey has been an absolutely transformative experience for our son and our family. As parents, we can’t say enough about the positive impact she has had on our family. She has helped both ourselves and our son understand how he learns differently and how he, too, can be successful in the classroom.” -Parent of a 5th-grade student</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Approach</image:title>
<image:caption>“Throughout my childhood I’ve struggled with ADHD and Dyscalculia; my family hired multiple tutors but no one understood my needs and after every session, I was left feeling hopeless and stupid. Kelsey has been such a blessing to my life, she is well versed in learning differences and treats all of her students with kindness, compassion, and provides a judgment-free environment.” - an 11th-grade student</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - Kelsey young is…</image:title>
<image:caption>An Educational Therapist, Nutritionist, and founder of Roots of Learning. She received her B.A. in Psychology along with a minor in Business Administration from Sonoma State University in 2008 and went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Education and certificate in Educational Therapy from Holy Names University in 2011. Roots of Learning was founded in 2014 to provide highly customized, 1:1 instruction for children with learning differences. With over 15 years of teaching experience, Kelsey has supported learners through 1:1 educational therapy, academic tutoring, and consultative services with educational teams. Kelsey has worked in both private practice and as a faculty member at a K-6th school developing their on-site learning center and integrating evidence-based educational therapy techniques into classroom instruction. Kelsey has also developed an executive function program aimed at supporting student readiness and creating independent, successful students from elementary through high school and beyond. In addition to her hands-on work as an educational therapist, Kelsey also serves as an instructor in the Education department at the University of Riverside and teaches graduate courses in educational therapy theory and techniques. Motivated and informed by her own health struggles, Kelsey went on to research the impact of nutrition on learning challenges as well. She wrote her master’s thesis on nutritional intervention and ADD/ADHD in 2011 and received a certification in Clinical Nutrition from The Natural Healing Institute of Naturopathy 3 years later. For families seeking a holistic approach to learning differences, Kelsey combines her education and nutritional expertise to develop individualized wellness plans to optimize learning.</image:caption>
